Members don´t stay logged in

I am running VB 3.6.8 and most of my members have trouble staying logged in. They´ll be ok with the server browser open, but once the browser is closed and a new one opened, they usually have to log in again later, even though they have the option checked to remain logged in. This happens with both IE and FireFox. Also, when this happens, all the new messages get marked as read when they log back in, so I had to change it so members have to manually mark the messages read. Any suggestions?
